CAMPO MAIOR
Located in the Alentejo region, near the border, Campo Maior sits amidst a vast plain stretching for over 50 kilometers, which the Romans are believed to have called "Campus Major". Today, it is a town of quiet streets and whitewashed houses, home to a welcoming population.
It is this population that, when united, creates one of the most original festivals in the country, which is why it is called "Festas do Povo" (People's Festival) or "Festas das Flores" (Flower Festival). This event only takes place when the people decide to come together and produce thousands of paper flowers to decorate more than a hundred streets with great imagination. Recognizing its uniqueness, it has been classified by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity. It is a spectacle of color and joy that attracts thousands of visitors, but it has no fixed date or periodicity (the last edition took place in 2015).
FESTAS DO POVO
Festas do Povo (also known as the Flower Festivals) only take place when the people of Campo Maior decide. It is one of the most impressive (and beautiful) portuguese traditions. The streets of the town are decorated with colorful paper flowers. Each street keeps its decorations secret until the night before the start of the festivities, when everything is set up.
