Afonso Henriques – County of Portucale
At the end of the 11th century, a new political entity was created: the County of Portucale.
Alfonso VI, Emperor of Hispania, granted his daughter Teresa, at the time of her betrothal to Henry of Burgundy, the territory from Coimbra to the castle of Lobreira in Galicia, including the Land of Santa Maria, all the land of Lamego and Viseu, also adding the land that the Moors possessed, provided she conquered it and added it to her County.
In 1112, the County of Portucale came to be governed by Teresa, a woman and widow who faced great challenges, overcoming them thanks to her talents and sagacity, and the help of a good group of nobles from her House.
Crowning herself queen in 1117, Queen Teresa resided in the village of Feira, located outside the walls of her castle, where she made donations to powerful figures from the Land of Santa Maria for services rendered in the defense of the city of Coimbra during the Almoravid siege.
Queen Teresa, along with her son, the young Afonso Henriques, was caught in the middle of power struggles promoted by the great lords of the County and some Galician families, which led to armed conflicts and shifts in authority within the territory.
After the Battle of São Mamede on June 24, 1128, the queen lost power to her son Afonso Henriques, who then represented a new dominion and a new sovereignty: the autonomy of the County from the Leonese kingdom.
