CARMEN MIRANDA - THE GREAT MUSICAL
“Carmen Miranda – The Great Musical” is a super production by Filipe La Féria that pays homage to the life and career of the Portuguese-Brazilian star who conquered Hollywood and the world with her unique voice and style. The show combines music, dance, humor, and emotion in a vibrant tribute to Carmen Miranda. It is currently playing at the Teatro Politeama, with a cast of extraordinary actors, singers, musicians, and dancers. Filipe La Féria presents a grand spectacle, full of joy, with a dazzling wardrobe and set design that evokes the environments experienced by Carmen Miranda.
Carmen Miranda was the first great Portuguese-Brazilian star to conquer the world. More than a hundred years after her birth, she remains an unavoidable name: in music, fashion, creative freedom, and that happy mix of cultures that she made seem so natural.
LISBON HISTORY CENTER
The Lisbon Story Center, located in the east wing of the iconic Terreiro do Paço, is an interactive interpretation center that offers an immersive journey through more than two thousand years of the history of the Portuguese capital. Through detailed scenography, multimedia technology, and an audio guide available in several languages, visitors explore six thematic areas ranging from the myths of the city's founding by Ulysses and the Age of Discoveries to modern times. One of the most striking moments of the visit, which lasts about 60 minutes, is the sensory experience of the 1755 earthquake, which allows visitors to understand the impact of the catastrophe and the subsequent innovative vision of the Marquis of Pombal for the reconstruction of Lisbon's Baixa district.
AUGUSTA STREET ARCH
The Augusta Street Arch symbolizes the strength of Lisbon reborn after the fury of the earth, fire, and sea that consumed it in the 1755 earthquake. At the top, you can see the magnificent sculptures by Célestin Anatole Calmels, where Glory crowns Genius and Valor. The other statues, by Victor Bastos, represent figures from our history. To the left we find the Marquis of Pombal, followed by Vasco da Gama, Viriato, and, further to the right, Nuno Álvares Pereira. It is impossible not to be inspired by such figures, in a 360º view from where you can see the best that Lisbon has to offer.
CARMEN MIRANDA
Born in Marco de Canaveses in 1909, Carmen Miranda moved to Brazil as a baby, where she grew up and became a world-famous artist. From radio to stage and then to film, it was a natural progression. With enormous talent and, above all, an irreplaceable voice, Carmen possessed a contagious energy and a very original style for her time. All these attributes made her name quickly cross borders, conquer Broadway stages, and achieve success in Hollywood.
With her exotic tropical turbans, exuberant and irreverent style, she surprised and dictated fashion in her time, crossing decades and an entire century without ever losing her relevance.
Among her most successful songs, “Taí (Pra Você Gostar de Mim)” became immortalized, as did the enormous hit “O Que É Que a Baiana Tem?”, a song that she brought to the big screen in “Banana da Terra” (1939), her last appearance in Brazilian cinema before conquering the United States, in addition to many others that became inseparable from her image, such as “Mamãe Eu Quero”, “Chica Chica Boom Chic” or “I Like You Very Much (I, Yi, Yi, Yi, Yi)”. In cinema, Carmen was a prominent presence in musical films that projected her internationally, from “Sinfonia dos Trópicos” (1940) and “Uma Noite no Rio” (1941) to “Férias em Havana” (1941), or “Sinfonia de Estrelas” (1943), one of the most iconic titles of her period in Hollywood.
