PROCESSION OF THE BURIAL OF THE LORD
Organized by the Cathedral Chapter, the Brotherhoods of Mercy and of the Holy Cross, and the Holy Week Commission, this imposing procession—the most solemn and moving of all—carries the coffin of the dead Lord through the streets of the city. It is preceded by a litter with the bare cross and followed by that of Our Lady of Sorrows. It is accompanied by these and other brotherhoods, knights of the Sovereign Order of Malta and of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, members of the Cathedral Chapter, various corporations, and authorities. As a sign of mourning, the members of the Chapter and the Confraternities wear head coverings. To show their grief, the allegorical figures display a mourning veil. The rattles of the penitents are silent. The flags and banners, with mourning bands, drag along the ground.
We begin our itinerary in the city of Braga, immersing ourselves in its rich religious and architectural heritage. In the heart of the city, we visit Braga Cathedral, one of Portugal's diocesan monuments, whose construction dates back to the 12th century. Its impressive architecture tells centuries of religious history. We ascend to the emblematic Bom Jesus Sanctuary, famous for its monumental Baroque staircase, which represents a Stations of the Cross. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers an unforgettable panoramic view over the city. We also visit the Sameiro Sanctuary, one of the most important Marian centers in Portugal, known for its imposing dome and the tranquility of its grounds. As a highlight, we witness the solemn and moving Procession of the Burial of the Lord, organized by the Cathedral Chapter and various brotherhoods, a profound moment of Braga's Holy Week. It is the most solemn and moving procession of Holy Week, carrying the coffin of the dead Lord through the streets in a profound atmosphere of mourning and respect.
In Guimarães, the "Birthplace of the Nation," we will explore its Historic Center, a World Heritage Site, where medieval streets tell the story of Portugal. Its picturesque squares and well-preserved buildings invite you on a journey through time. We will visit the imposing Guimarães Castle, often associated with the birth of Afonso Henriques and the beginning of national independence. Entry is free for Portuguese citizens. Adjacent to the castle, we will visit the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza. This palace, with its remarkable architecture and rich interiors, is a testament to the power of the first House of Braganza. Entry is also free for Portuguese citizens. We will ascend to the Penha Sanctuary, which offers a breathtaking view over the city. For the descent, there is the option of using the Guimarães cable car, a unique aerial experience. The cable car ride is not included and is optional.
