The Lazarim Carnival is a tradition held in the village of Lazarim, in the municipality of Lamego, located in the Douro region. It is known for its wooden masks which, along with the costumes, are the highlight of the celebration. The tradition of carving wooden masks in Lazarim dates back several generations, and these sculptures are the result of skills passed down from father to son.
The masks are mainly carved from alder, a wood that is abundant in the region. The Lazarim Carnival culminates in a grand parade, where the Caretos (masked figures) walk through the village streets to the sound of drums. The masks are used to conceal the participants' identities, allowing them to play and have fun without revealing their true identities.

The Interpretive Center of Iberian Masks has as its main objective the appreciation, promotion and dissemination of this cultural heritage of universally known importance, symbolism and meaning. Built in a former manor house of the Viscounts of Lazarim, the CIMI has an exhibition - costumes, masks and objects from the winter masquerades and carnivals of Portugal and Spain.
