Monsanto Castle and Historic Village

Nestled on a steep hillside, Monsanto is famous for blending its architecture with "Baroque" elements—gigantic granite blocks that serve as walls, roofs, and foundations for the dwellings, creating a visually stunning setting. At the top, the imposing walls of its Templar castle hold legends and offer an absolutely breathtaking 360-degree view. Titled "The Most Portuguese Village in Portugal" in 1938, its timeless and mystical beauty has even attracted international attention, serving as a backdrop for the famous prequel series Game of Thrones.

DESCRIPTION
FIND OUT WHAT THIS TRIP CONSISTS OF

Idanha-a-Velha (Historic Village of Portugal)

This village is a true open-air archive, rising above the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Egitânia. Walking through its peaceful streets is like stepping back millennia in history, where one of the oldest cathedrals in the Iberian Peninsula stands out, along with an imposing Templar tower built on a Roman podium and a unique archaeological collection in Europe. It is a place where the stones speak of Romans, Suevi, Visigoths, Arabs, and Christian kings, maintaining a mystical and timeless atmosphere.

Forno Viewpoint

Strategically located on the ascent to the granite ridge of Monsanto, this viewpoint offers one of the most essential photographic stops in the region. From there, the view extends for kilometers over the vast plain of the Idanha countryside, revealing a landscape of olive groves and cork oak forests that contrasts dramatically with the rocky slopes. This is the ideal spot to become aware of the altitude and geographical isolation that have made this area an impregnable natural fortress over the centuries.

Penha Garcia Castle

Perched abruptly atop an impressive quartzite cliff, this castle offers one of the most dramatic and scenic silhouettes in the country's interior. Although the current fortress is of modest dimensions, its strategic position in the Pônsul River basin guaranteed the defense of the border against Castilian invasions. From the top of its surviving towers and walls, the view over the gorge carved by the river and the reservoir is breathtaking, combining military history with untamed nature.

Fossil Route

This hiking trail in Penha Garcia is an authentic journey through time, dating back approximately 480 million years, to a time when the region was submerged by a prehistoric ocean. Along the imposing quartzitic crags that form the Pônsul River canyon, it is easy to observe with the naked eye the "ichnofossils"—traces of activity and tracks left by trilobites (ancient marine organisms) engraved in the rock. The route, part of the UNESCO Naturtejo Geopark, connects this unique paleontological heritage to a beautiful set of restored watermills and a stunning natural pool.
